1. Droppings in cupboards or along skirting boards

2. Musty or oily odours in enclosed spaces

Cockroaches in particular leave behind a distinct musty smell, especially in cupboards, behind appliances, or in rarely-opened drawers. If a smell persists after cleaning, that's usually because the source is still active somewhere out of sight.

3. Damaged wood, or a hollow sound when you tap it

Termites eat wood from the inside out, so the surface can look fine while the structure underneath is compromised. Bed bugs tend to bite in a line or cluster, usually on skin that was exposed while sleeping. If you're waking up with marks that weren't there before, check the seams of your mattress and the edges of your bed frame for small reddish-brown insects or dark spotting.

5. You're seeing pests during the day

Cockroaches and rodents are mostly nocturnal. Spotting them out in the open during daylight hours usually means the population has grown large enough that there isn't enough shelter for all of them at night — a sign the problem is more advanced than it might first appear.
